Zanfirico (Twisted Latticino)
Real zanfirico/filigrana a retorti canes use several thin threads laid evenly around a core cylinder's circumference (not just one, and packed edge to edge, touching their neighbors, not loosely scattered). Then a layer of clear glass is gathered over the whole threaded core to lock the threads in place before anything is twisted. Only then is the encased bundle twisted as it's pulled, turning the straight parallel threads into the classic corkscrew lattice.
How it's made
- Gather the core color onto a punty (often clear, but any color works).
- Lay several thin threads of the accent color evenly spaced around the core's circumference and marver them in so they fuse to the surface.
- Gather a layer of clear glass over the whole threaded core, locking the threads in place under a smooth outer surface.
- Reheat and pull the encased bundle into a rod while twisting it. The twist is what turns the straight parallel threads into a corkscrew lattice; pulling without twisting keeps them running straight instead.
