Cross Bundle

A center cane surrounded by four more canes at north, south, east and west, so the fused bundle reads as a plus-shaped cross in cross-section. Cross and star motifs are a recognized family of historical Venetian murrini patterns. It is built like the Tripod, with four canes per ring instead of three.

How it's made

  1. Pull a center cane and four (or more, in a second ring) outer canes, all matching diameter.
  2. Pack the outer canes against the center one at the four compass points, so the group forms a plus/cross shape.
  3. Fuse the bundle with a reheat, then draw it out from both ends into one smaller-diameter composite rod.
  4. Slice the cooled rod crosswise: every slice shows the same cross-shaped arrangement.
